AndroSPOK: Men the Weaker Sex?
Traditionally, MEN HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED THE STRONGER SEX. However, is it actually true? Trends of the modern society’s development are rapid and rampant. Daily, a modern man is exposed to the impact of a plethora of adverse effects, stress situations and lives in declining environmental situation. Currently, men’s health is more vulnerable than that of women. This is due to a number of reasons as follows:
- Adaptability. Unlike women, men are more prone to changes of the surroundings and external impacts with serious consequences to their health. Women’s organism is less responsive to any changes of the surroundings than that of men due to a higher adaptive capacity.
- Lifestyle. As a rule, men pay less attention to their health and maintaining it. Men are more frequently prone to addiction (tobacco smoking, alcoholism, drug abuse).
- Excessive masculinity. According to statistics, men much more rarely visit doctors than women (twice as rare as women do) when they encounter heath problems and frequently miss the right moment to do timely diagnostics. As a rule, when they apply for the medical aid, the disease turns into a chronic form, thus making it hard to treat.
- Ignorance in Society. From the early childhood, women’s health is paid much more attention (for example, annual gynecological examination) compared to that of men. This, as a rule, explains much lower progress in detection rate of male sexual disorders. In addition, for some obscure reasons teaching boys about healthy lifestyles is not paid an adequate attention to.
Men’s health problems are more than enough... This includes, inter alia, erectile dysfunction (impotence), premature ejaculation and a number of other small pelvis inflammatory disorders (prostatitis, urethritis, etc.). Up to 30% of men are afflicted with such a disorder as chronic prostatitis and this is an upward trend in incidence. Undoubtedly, increased sexual activity (specifically, having sex early in life, frequently changing sexual partners) followed by infections transmission and hypodynamia being conductive to congestive (stagnation) effects in the small pelvis most frequently caused by sedentary life-style and work (drivers and office workers) are the major contributors to the above disorders.
The drug therapy (even timely started) not always allows the factors causing a disease to be efficiently eliminated. Frequently, the drug therapy has effect only on symptoms, with mechanisms and causes of the disorder development (etiotropic component) being not effected. In addition, an efficient delivery of a drug to a target organ is sometimes a problem due to changes in a pathological focus or to anatomic peculiarities of an organ (for example such as a prostate gland).
This promotes advances in health science to make research into and develop treatment methods aimed at minimizing the drug therapy, while enhancing its efficiency and also develop efficient preventive actions allowing the men’s health to be preserved. One of such areas in clinical medicine is physiotherapy.
Currently, the development of the modern health science has contributed to emergence of a number of physiotherapy technologies comprising the combined use of physical modalities helping significantly enhance efficiency of the therapy to be administered, primarily, due to the effect on the majority of stages of the pathological process development and also due to unleashing the reserve capacity. This makes the use of technologies of the combined physiotherapy in the complex treatment of the majority of the disorders an indispensable and compulsory component.
